3. Ait Benhaddou (200 km)
One of Morocco's most photographed UNESCO sites — a fortified ksar (village) built from mud and straw that has appeared in Game of Thrones, Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Combine with a visit to Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Africa, for a full day.
4. Atlas Mountains & Imlil (60 km)
The town of Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal — North Africa's highest peak. Even without trekking, the drive up into the High Atlas offers stunning scenery. Stop at Asni market on Saturdays.
5. Cascades d'Ouzoud (155 km)
Morocco's most impressive waterfalls, dropping 110 meters into a palm-filled gorge. The drive takes about 2.5 hours but the falls are spectacular. Barbary macaques live in the surrounding forest.
6. Agafay Desert (40 km)
The closest desert to Marrakech — a rocky moonscape of stone and dust just 40 km from the city. No sand dunes, but extraordinary light at sunrise and sunset. Many camps offer camel rides and lunch.
7. Ouarzazate (200 km)
Beyond the High Atlas, Ouarzazate is the gateway to the Sahara. Visit the famous Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. Combine with Ait Benhaddou for a full-day itinerary covering both UNESCO sites.
