The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga — gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes of the Sahara — is one of the great road journeys of the world. Distance & Duration
Marrakech to Merzouga is 560 km one way. Allow 7 to 8 hours of driving with minimal stops. Most travelers prefer to break the journey over two days, stopping overnight in Ouarzazate or Zagora.
What You'll See on the Route
The Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass (2,260 m) offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Morocco. The Draa Valley south of Agdz is lined with thousands of date palms and traditional mud-brick villages. Ait Benhaddou — one of Morocco's most famous UNESCO sites — is passed en route and worth a 2-hour stop. The landscape gradually shifts from green valleys to pre-Saharan hamada (desert steppe) before Merzouga's dunes appear on the horizon.

What to Do in Merzouga
The Erg Chebbi dunes rise to 150 metres at their highest point. Most visitors arrive in the late afternoon to watch the sunset over the dunes before spending a night in a desert camp. A camel trek into the dunes at sunset is the classic experience.
